You cannot rank on ChatGPT, because it does not rank. It answers, and inside that answer it names a business. Everything below is about becoming the business it names.
Not in the way you rank on Google. There is no list of ten results to climb — the assistant states one answer and, if it is confident enough, names one or two businesses inside it. So the goal is not position, it is being the source it trusts enough to quote.
It prefers the source that answers the question outright, states facts that can be checked, and agrees with what the rest of the web says about you. Marketing language, page count and ad spend do not enter into it. Contradiction — between your page and your markup, or between your site and your directory listings — actively pushes you out.
Sometimes. It answers from what it learned during training and, for many questions, from a live search it runs at the moment you ask. That means two things matter: being crawlable now, and having been consistent for long enough that the trained-in picture of you matches the live one.
Six, in order of impact: state your facts in visible text; repeat them in schema markup; open every section with the answer in one sentence; keep your name, address and claims identical everywhere; earn a few detailed third-party mentions; and allow GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot in your robots file.
Changes get picked up when the crawlers next fetch your pages and the index behind them refreshes — usually weeks rather than days. Sites that were already consistent move faster, because there is less contradiction to resolve.
Ask the assistant the question your customers would ask, in a fresh chat, and see whose name comes back. Do it monthly and write the answers down. A citation score gives you the same read on the underlying page structure without waiting for the index.
